Begin with the foundation design
A pipe pile is part of a designed foundation system. The purchase specification should identify its structural role, geometry, material grade and governing requirements. ASTM A252/A252M covers cylindrical steel pipe piles used as load-carrying members or as shells for cast-in-place concrete piles. A reference to a material standard does not establish the pile's geotechnical capacity. The engineer must connect the product requirements to the ground investigation, loads and chosen installation method.
Include what happens during installation
Driving can impose demands different from those in the completed structure. FHWA guidance highlights drivability assessment and potential damage in hard driving conditions. Confirm whether the design calls for open or closed ends, driving shoes, strengthened sections or other details. Resolve these requirements with the designer and installation contractor before ordering. Do not let a substitution in wall thickness, grade or pile-end detail pass as a purely commercial change.
Plan lengths, splices and corrosion protection
Set out supplied lengths, allowable variation, splice locations and connection details. Transport and lifting limits may influence the delivery plan, while the site sequence determines which pieces are needed first. Specify corrosion allowance or protective systems from the project design, taking account of soil, groundwater and any marine exposure. If welded attachments or interlocks are required, include their drawings, dimensional checks and inspection scope in the order.
Make receipt and traceability straightforward
Agree the marking system and documentation before manufacture. The receiving team should be able to match each delivered item with its dimensions, material records and specified inspection results. Identify any hold points for project or third-party review. A delivery schedule, packing list and clear repair or rejection process complete the procurement package and help avoid decisions being deferred to the piling crew.
