Define the duty before the pipe
Water transmission selection begins with the system. Give the designer and supplier the flow requirement, operating conditions, route and installation method. Identify whether the water is potable, raw, recycled or industrial process water. Normal operation is only part of the design picture: pressure transients, external loads, vacuum conditions and installation stages may also matter. The design team should establish the pipe dimensions and performance requirements before purchasing turns them into an enquiry.
Specify the inside and outside separately
The internal lining and external coating solve different exposure problems. Select the lining for the water chemistry, service conditions and applicable water-contact requirements. Select external protection for the soil, groundwater, aboveground exposure and installation process. AWWA publishes separate standards for steel water pipe and for several coating and lining systems, including liquid epoxy and fusion-bonded epoxy. Naming the pipe standard alone therefore does not fully describe the corrosion-protection package.
Check water-contact evidence precisely
For drinking-water service, ask which approvals the project requires and request evidence for the exact lining product and use conditions. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 addresses health effects from materials contacting drinking water; it does not replace mechanical pipe design or establish every performance characteristic. Review any listing limitations with the project team. Keep the material approval, application procedure and finished-pipe inspection records linked in the final documentation.
Make the joints part of the purchase
Agree joint type, end preparation, field welding or coupling requirements, and the method for restoring protection at joints. Include fittings, special pieces and inspection access in the scope. Confirm storage supports, lifting methods and repair materials before delivery. A coordinated pipe-and-joint package helps the site preserve the intended protection from receipt through installation and commissioning.
